Are Ethics enough?

We Learn Ethics in School.
So Why Are Therapists Still Struggling with Inappropriate Clients?
Most massage therapists receive ethics training during school. We learn professional boundaries, informed consent, confidentiality, and standards of conduct.
Yet many therapists still find themselves questioning uncomfortable interactions, second-guessing their instincts, or wondering if they handled a situation correctly.
Why?
Because ethics teaches us how we should behave as professionals. It doesn't always teach us how to recognize when someone else is intentionally testing boundaries.
Many inappropriate situations don't begin with obvious misconduct. They often start with small behaviors that create confusion, self-doubt, or uncertainty.
One of the most important lessons therapists can learn is this:
Pay attention when something feels off.
You may not immediately know why, but your discomfort deserves attention rather than dismissal.
Professional safety is not about fear. It's about awareness, preparation, and having systems in place that support good decision-making before situations escalate.
As therapists, we deserve more than education that simply checks a box. We deserve education that helps us navigate the real-world challenges we may encounter throughout our careers.
